When getting your air conditioning unit repaired, it is good to familiarize yourself with various aspects of the industry and process to ensure that you get professional and reliable service that you won’t have to fix over, and over again. At Competence Air Services, we want our customers to trust us, so we’ve come up with a quick Q&A of some questions you may have about your air conditioning and ventilation service.

What does HVAC stand for?

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

What is an HVAC contractor and technician?

A licensed HVAC contractor is an individual, business or company that provides HVAC services including installing, maintaining, and repairing an HVAC system (such as an air conditioning unit). An HVAC technician is the person who performs such services.

What does it take to be an HVAC contractor?

HVAC contractor licensing requirements vary by state. In Florida, HVAC contractors, being licensed is a requirement, and there are two classes for licensing: Class A and Class B. Additionally, the two classes (A or B), can either be state certified or state registered.

What is the difference between Class A or B and certified or registered HVAC licensing?

Class A allows the contractor (as well as the technician working under the contractor) to provide services anywhere in the state, whereas Class B licensing is restricted to  providing services for heating systems that are 500,000 BTU (British thermal units), as well as cooling systems that are no more than 20 tons.

Being certified allows a contractor and technician to provide services anywhere in the state, whereas being registered only allows one to service a specific city/area. So, a State Certified Class A license, for example, would allow a contractor and technician to work anywhere in the state on any unit.

What makes an HVAC contractor or service good?

Expertise, honesty, and a commitment to the customer is what you want when you are looking for an HVAC company to meet your needs. Those lacking in such qualities, such as unqualified or unlicensed companies and technicians looking to scam the customer, should be avoided at all costs. You should not opt for an unlicensed technician offering you a very low price, because they will likely provide you with service that is not desirable. Instead, working with a reputable and licensed company ensures a good outcome on both sides.

How do I know when my HVAC system or air conditioning unit is in need of repair?

More often than not, the answer to this question is: when it stops working. To avoid having to call an A/C company for emergency work, it is good to observe what sort of issue or issues you are dealing with when it comes to your HVAC system. For instance, perhaps the air conditioner is not working properly, and the air still feels hot or there is noticeable humidity within the room. Maybe there is something leaking from the unit. When an air conditioner or heater is not doing its various functions, like heating, cooling, ventilating, or controlling for humidity, then you should call or schedule a maintenance check.

What should I expect when I get my HVAC or air conditioning unit repaired?

After booking a service, or requesting routine or emergency maintenance, you can expect an HVAC technician to arrive in a timely manner to attend to your repair needs. During this process, a Competence Air Services technician will be there to communicate with you and listen to what you may have detected within your system. The technician will analyze the system/unit, such as looking at the compressor, filter or refrigerant, in order to assess what is going on. After the problem is detected, the technician will be able to assess what needs to be done, and effectively complete the job. No matter what problem is detected, Competence Air Services will be there for you through the process, and ensure that the job gets done.
